loch fitty

loch fitty, 2nd december
down in the shadowy glen
we loved long and hard in the amber
but night always had to descend
she has a house up in anniesland
down a little back road
you can tell her i'm back but don't tell her all that - she doesn't need to know
breeze blowing through the cathedral
it's like a song on the bell
i don't claim to be a believer
but i was for a spell
a little faith in a promise, sir
it just never took hold
you can tell her i'm back but don't tell her all that - she doesn't need to know
here's a drink to the future
as we watch it go by
here's a drink to those memories
we just had to let die
and here's a drink to your fairytale
that i have to let go
you can tell her i'm back but don't tell her all that - she doesn't need to know
out by loch fitty in december
well, it's a nice time to go
you can tell her i'm back but don't tell her all that - she doesn't need to know

this place is nothing but rubble
the tired face with the stubble forever turned away
she's only looking for trouble
but i've had more than a couple and it's the usual display
the money's there, i could take it and run
so it's straight down to business
but there's always a witness - depends who you know
and outside in the city it's looking even less pretty after the money goes
but underneath god's burning sun someone here must know how things are supposed to be done
i'm just sitting at the ready while the engines run
she went away in the winter
but i try not to remember whatever else she said
she's got a house up in dollar
i made a promise to call her but then i never did
but underneath god's burning sun someone down here knows how things are supposed to be done
i'm just sitting at the ready while the engines run
there's the moon at the finish
but where's the rest of the promise we lost along the way
there's the love that i wasted
but where's the blood that i tasted on that fatal day
and where's the faith i started from
where's the man who knew how things were supposed to be done
underneath god's burning sun someone down here knows how things are supposed to be done
underneath god's burning sun someone here must know...

traveling lite
04:37
|
|||
let's make the best of a bad situation
it's not like it's never happened before
and the last train is leaving the station
so we'll call it a night
see, i'm traveling lite and i've still got a way to go
it was made as an honest suggestion
there's no way that anybody could know
but deep in my heart was a trembling question
that i had to set right
so i'm traveling lite and i've still got a way to go
well, i knew that i'd have to be leaving
i just had to get away from my home
looking to find someone who'd receive me
where their faces are bright
but i'm traveling lite and i've still got a way to go
now we go back to before the beginning
and i lose you to the rest of the world
it's just now and then when i notice it spinning
that i have to hold tight
but i'm traveling lite and i've still got a way to go

there you are of a sudden - shuffling along with the crowd
i was hoping you could tell me what i said last night -hope i didn't say it too loud
did some things that i shouldn't and there's always someone looking at me
tried to let her in but i couldn't go and let her see the monster in me
and say hello to jayne for me and tell her if you do
that wishing for a god up there, well, that won't make it true
it shouldn't be this hard but there's these things i can't undo
i guess then, i'd just rather stay here drinking in the afternoon
here we are of a sudden - don't know how we got through the door
i've been bruising on the shoulder from a slip i made last night or the night before
but let's turn this blood into wine, baby, and make an early start on the day
lay your sins next to mine and maybe something down here will help us wash them all away
and say hello to jayne for me and tell her if you do
that wishing for a god up there, well, that won't make it true
it shouldn't be this hard but there's these things i can't undo
i guess then, i'd just rather stay here drinking in the afternoon
drinking in the afternoon

long lost friend
03:48
|
|||
i returned to the village of a long lost friend
we used to play together
spent like the echo of a howling wind that's been and gone
true to the image i had, more or less
allow for age and weather
all that was missing there was something else that's been and gone
a picture fades - all washed out with the rain
i had to make it new again
i lay down a tear to a passing chance
i thought would last forever
but i can laugh, i can put it down to circumstance that's been and gone
but time's the tide that carries me away
i'd have done anything to stay
now i'm leaving the village of a long lost friend
we used to play together
if she calls, if she ever even knows i came, just say i've been and gone

one last prayer
05:10
|
|||
i'm sitting by the window watching the scenes as they change
but this car is just rolling - there's no-one controlling this train
i wrote her name in the frost on the glass that hides the world outside we've both lost
and it happened in an instant but we both sat watching it dying
we pretended not to notice like everyone else at that time
but if you hear me repeating her name it's just one last prayer to keep me from feeling the pain
i know you look ready but i hear that you're new to this game
you can keep all your money because down here we're only gambling rain
and anything else that you save, well it's worth no more than the price you paid on your way
but a man up here told me that his biggest mistake was the help
he'd have done better with nobody, he'd have done much better by himself
but if you hear me repeating her name it's just one last prayer to keep me from feeling the pain
i'm sitting by the window watching the road slip away
i've no thought for tomorrow and i'm not even sure of today
but if i ever wasted your time, you could have it all back if i thought you'd take some of mine
but it happened in an instant but we both sat watching it dying
we pretended not to notice like everyone else at that time
but if you hear me repeating her name it's just one last prayer to keep me from feeling the pain

today's the last day, we knew we'd see it some day
we feigned our indifference but more or less we all knew the same way
but you made up your mind and now the deal is done
you wanted your freedom so why don't you go out and tell everyone
but one day you'll look around and see i can't be found
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down
a house of cards collapse with every chance you pass
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down
so you've got a new man - He never told you His name
He gave you that umbrella and He told you to stand in the rain
so we all get bad news and i heard mine today
you choose your own poison but more or less we all die the same way
and one day you'll look around and see i can't be found
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down
a house of cards collapse with every chance you pass
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down
so today's the last day, we knew we'd be here some day
we make the same promises - more or less it all ends the same way
and one day you'll look around and see i can't be found
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down
a house of cards collapse with every chance you pass
and when you wish upon a star you bring your own sun down

you'll never know
04:11
|

you said you know and walked out the door
you said, you and me - we just couldn't be
because you'd been there before
it's all gone to plan like you knew it would do
but you'll never know the difference i wanted to make to you
i never reached for the silver or gold
i got in my car, i moved out of park and i just let it roll
you know what you want and you know what to do
but you'll never know the difference i wanted to make to you
right from the start, playing games with my heart
honey, please - why don't you
every thing you can see - talk it all off of me
honey, please - why don't you take it from me
why don't you take it from me
why don't you
never again will i knock on your door
i read what you wrote, now my heart is broke
it's sad and it's sore
for you it's all done - what i'm still going through
but you'll never know the difference i wanted to make to you
you know what you want and you know what to do
but you'll never know the difference i wanted to make to you

some go down fighting
some just sweep it to the side
some escape, but me - i'll never make it out alive
but it's my choice
it's the position i assume
these days i try to catch the moments as they pass
but that don't get you back...
cold and lonely
it's the first day of december
the things i can't forget inform the things i half remember
old box of tickets in the corner of my room
i draw the blue to black across the union jack
but that don't get you back...
there's the tide
i see it's rolling home again
i know the game, it always leaves, returns and leaves again
it got me once but now i'm just about immune
but sunlight through the cracks of cloudy, tinted glass
the fire as it crackles - it almost makes me laugh
these moments go so fast
these moments go so fast
i watch them as they pass
but that don't get you back
that don't get you back...
some go down fighting
some just sweep it to the side
some escape, but me - i'll never make it out alive
